Dancing Cow Day

Just when I thought the brilliance of burning witches in Denmark couldn’t be topped.  Along comes Dancing Cow Day – or økodag.  I’ve been waiting a whole year to take a crack at this Danish tradition while using BBB (Bilingual Backpack Baby) as my excuse.

Yes I’m calling it a tradition even though it only started in 2005.

It’s pure brilliance.  The Anchor cows have nothing on it.

What is it?

Every year a day is designated to be when the organic cows of Denmark are let out into the open air after spending a long winter indoors.  Yup.  All winter.  Indoors.  And you all probably thought you got cabin fever just spending Easter weekend indoors.

It’s a big day.  Paddocks turn quickly into sprawling, yet very orderly (it is Denmark after all) carparks with 250,000 Danes visiting one of the many designated farms throughout the country who open their gates to the public.

Paddocks turn into sprawling carparks.  Largely orderly.  Until everyone wants to leave at the same time that is.

There are activities for the kids, free stuff.  Like really good free stuff.  Icecream, cheese, yoghurt and my personal favourite novelty milk cups.

Not that one.  The udder one.

See!  Free stuff.  Really good free stuff. Thanks Arla.

There are animals on display for the littlies (& biggies) to view.  It’s a moofest basically.  A mass of people running amuk over a working farm who then hustle around the barn as the clock strikes noon to watch the cows run, skip and jump outside.

It’s hard to know who this day is more exciting for.  The cows, the humans, BBB or BBB’s Mum.

But words can only do so much justice to this superbly danish phenomenon.  So you'll need to check out our video as we went 'backstage'  rather than join the masses outside.

Oh and we got a cool new logo.  We reckon it's nearly as awesome as a dancing cow.  Det er meget dejligt ;)
